How the clutch works

During separation, step on the pedal, and the separation fork pushes the separation bearing, driving the inner end of the separation lever to move left, and the outer end of the separation lever to move right. At the same time, it drives the pressure plate to move right, causing the flywheel to separate from the driven plate, and the power is interrupted.

When engaging, lift the pedal, and under the action of spring elasticity, the release bearing gradually returns and the pressure plate moves to the left under the action of the compression spring, pressing the driven plate against the flywheel.

Basic requirements for clutches

1. Complete separation and soft combination.

2. The moment of inertia of the driven part should be as small as possible.

3. Good heat dissipation performance.

Clutch pedal free travel

After the clutch is used for a long time, the driven plate becomes thinner, and the pressure plate will move a distance toward the flywheel. To ensure the clutch is engaged, the inner end of the release lever must also move to the right.

Therefore, when installing (i.e. when engaging), there should be a gap between the inner end of the release lever and the release bearing. When depressing the clutch pedal, this gap should be eliminated before the clutch can be separated. The clutch pedal stroke that eliminates this gap is called is the clutch pedal free travel.
